Global Research Synergy: Nigerian Researcher Examines Mathematical Modeling for Infectious Diseases at FST UNAIR

Global Research Synergy Strengthens Academic Atmosphere at FST UNAIR

Surabaya – The Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), strengthened global research synergy through an international guest lecture on Thursday (21/5). The event took place at the Faculty of Science and Technology Meeting Room on the second floor.

During the event, the department invited John O. Akanni, Ph.D., a researcher from KolaDaisi University, Nigeria. In addition to conducting research activities, Dr. John also carried out academic collaborations within the Department of Mathematics at FST UNAIR. Therefore, the event created opportunities to expand international academic partnerships.

Students and lecturers attended the forum enthusiastically. Moreover, participants actively explored how mathematics can address global health challenges through epidemiological modeling. As a result, the guest lecture provided relevant academic insights connected to current global issues.

Epidemiological Modeling Became the Main Discussion

During the session, Dr. John delivered a presentation titled “Parameter Estimation and Data Fitting for Epidemiological Models.” He explained that mathematics plays a crucial role in predicting the spread of infectious diseases.

First, he described the process of epidemiological data analysis systematically. Next, he explained how researchers construct non-linear differential equation systems to model disease transmission. In addition, he introduced parameter estimation techniques using modern optimization algorithms.

Several methods included Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Genetic Algorithm. Furthermore, Dr. John presented a case study on Ebola virus transmission modeling to help participants understand the practical application of mathematical models. Consequently, students gained a clearer understanding of how mathematical modeling supports decision-making in public health.

Not only did he discuss theory, but Dr. John also highlighted the importance of epidemiological modeling for health risk mitigation. In other words, mathematical analysis can support governments and researchers in designing more effective prevention strategies.

Students and Lecturers Joined Interactive Scientific Discussions

The discussion session began at 10.00 a.m. and continued actively throughout the event. Students asked questions about mathematical models and their implementation in health policy analysis. Additionally, participants discussed challenges related to epidemiological data processing in real-world situations.

Meanwhile, the Vice Dean III for Research, Community Service, and Cooperation at FST UNAIR, Prof. Dr. Fatmawati, M.Si., also attended the session. As an expert in mathematical modeling, she shared academic perspectives regarding the development of applied mathematics research in Indonesia.

Because the discussion remained interactive, the academic atmosphere became more dynamic and collaborative. Furthermore, many students expressed strong interest in future collaborative research opportunities involving mathematical modeling and global health studies.

FST UNAIR Expands International Academic Collaboration

Through this event, FST UNAIR continues to strengthen global research synergy with international institutions. Besides improving the quality of higher education, the collaboration also opens opportunities for cross-border research partnerships.

Moreover, international academic cooperation encourages innovation in mathematical modeling research. Therefore, future studies are expected to contribute meaningful solutions to global health and humanitarian challenges.

In the future, the Department of Mathematics at FST UNAIR plans to maintain and expand international collaboration programs. Consequently, the faculty can continue supporting scientific development that responds to rapidly evolving global challenges.
