NEWTON 2.0 FST UNAIR officially launched an international collaboration with Mahidol University, Thailand. The program reflects the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), Universitas Airlangga’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In addition, the initiative combines academic learning with practical field experience. As a result, participants gain valuable insights into sustainable development while strengthening international partnerships.
The Opening Ceremony took place at the Faculty Meeting Room of FST Universitas Airlangga on Monday (July 20). Prof. Dr. Fatmawati, M.Si., Vice Dean III for Research, Community Service, and Collaboration, opened the program. Danar Arifka Rahman, S.T., M.T., coordinated the event as the Program Person in Charge. Barry Nuqoba, Ph.D., guided the academic activities throughout the program. Meanwhile, the FST UNAIR Student Ambassadors supported participant coordination and ensured every session ran smoothly.
Prof. Dr. Fatmawati welcomed 27 students and four academic staff members from Mahidol University. She emphasized that FST UNAIR designed the program to address global environmental challenges. Furthermore, she encouraged participants to develop practical solutions through international collaboration and interdisciplinary learning.
NEWTON 2.0 FST UNAIR Promotes Sustainable Learning and International Collaboration
The program focuses on SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy. In addition, participants explore SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. They also study SDG 13: Climate Action through interactive learning activities. Consequently, participants understand how scientific knowledge can support sustainable development and environmental protection.
During the week-long program, FST UNAIR lecturers delivered academic lectures covering sustainability and environmental issues. Afterwards, participants visited the Karangpilang Water Treatment Plant to observe water management practices. Next, they explored the Wonorejo Mangrove Ecotourism area to learn about ecosystem conservation. They also visited Kampung Batik Okra to discover how local communities integrate cultural heritage with sustainable economic development.
Furthermore, participants worked together in multicultural teams to develop group projects. Each team proposed innovative solutions for current environmental challenges. At the same time, discussions with lecturers and fellow students encouraged critical thinking and knowledge exchange. Finally, participants joined the Surabaya City Tour to experience the city’s cultural heritage while strengthening friendships across national boundaries.
NEWTON 2.0 FST UNAIR demonstrates FST Universitas Airlangga’s strong commitment to expanding global academic cooperation. Moreover, the program strengthens the partnership between Universitas Airlangga and Mahidol University. It also creates opportunities for future research collaboration, student engagement, and academic exchange. Ultimately, the initiative prepares future leaders who are innovative, globally minded, and committed to building a more sustainable world.
