UNAIR NEWS – Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science and Technology, Universitas Airlangga (FST UNAIR) opened a fast track program. This program enables students of Chemistry study program to finish their undergraduate program and postgraduate program in 5 years in total. The fast track program of Department of Chemistry is the first one in FST. This step is an endeavor of acceleration to accelerate students in achieving Master’s degree.

Dr. Purkan, M. Si. as the head of Department of Chemistry explained that the program was opened this program to facilitate students with excellent academic abilities so as to make them learn fast and shorten their study period.

“Technically, in the seventh semester, undergraduate students are able to take semester one module of postgraduate program. Therefore, the undergraduate and postgraduate programs can be finished in only five years,” described Purkan on Tuesday (25/01). “This program has been running for one semester. Six students who have participated (taken the first semester modules of postgraduate program) showed satisfying results,” he added.

Purkan added, there are many academic requirements for this program. Students must already have completed six semesters with total modular credits of minimum 105 and Cumulative Grade Point Average (cGPA) of minimum 3.51. Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) must also be at least 475.

This program is also opened for chemistry students from other higher education institutions. However, the institution must have grade A for accreditation, the students must be willing to follow the learning activities in FST UNAIR, and of course the students must fulfill the academic requirements. However, until now the fast track students only consist of students from UNAIR.

This fast track program gives an additional facility for students. They are free of SOP expense in their first year of postgraduate program. They only have to pay for SOP of semesters 7 and 8 according to the amount of their undergraduate SOP.

The first year of their fast track program determines the continuity of students in this program. If the GPA for 15 modular credits of postgraduate program in their first year is <3.50, their fast track program shall be cancelled. They will be switched to the regular postgraduate program. This, according to Purkan, is to maintain the quality of fast track graduates who are expected to have excellent academic grades. (*)
