The workshop was part of <strong>The 4th International Conference on Mathematics, Computational Sciences, and Statistics (ICoMCoS) 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The workshop carried the theme <strong>\u201cData-Driven Dynamic Modeling: Spatial, Temporal, and Approximation Perspectives.\u201d<\/strong> The theme highlighted the role of data-driven dynamic modeling in addressing real-world problems through mathematical, computational, and statistical approaches.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The event also supported the achievement of the <strong>Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)<\/strong>. In particular, the workshop supported SDG 4 on Quality Education, SDG 9 on Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, and SDG 17 on Partnerships for the Goals.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The workshop was held in a hybrid format from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Western Indonesia Time (WIB). Dozens of participants joined the event both in person in Surabaya and online. They discussed four main topics related to epidemiological modeling, spatial statistics, and trajectory optimization.<\/p>\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Machine Learning for Hepatitis B and Measles Outbreak Modeling<\/h5>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first session featured <strong>Dr. Chidozie Williams Chukwu from Georgia Southern University, United States<\/strong>. He delivered two presentations online.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/fst.unair.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/1B-800x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fst.unair.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/1B-800x1024.jpg 800w, https:\/\/fst.unair.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/1B-235x300.jpg 235w, https:\/\/fst.unair.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/1B-768x982.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fst.unair.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/1B.jpg 967w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first presentation was titled <strong>\u201cFrom Data to Prediction: Machine Learning Approaches for Hepatitis B.\u201d<\/strong> In this session, Dr. Chukwu explained the use of machine learning to support the early detection of Hepatitis B.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The model can also help predict patient clinical outcomes. He also introduced a hybrid mathematical model for analyzing outbreak transmission.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through this model, participants learned about numerical simulation results and outbreak forecasting. Agusto from the University of Kansas, United States<\/strong>. One of these challenges concerns the classical regression assumption of independent observations.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This assumption is often not satisfied when researchers analyze spatial data. Therefore, understanding relationships between regions is an important part of spatial analysis.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prof. Agusto also introduced several types of spatial data commonly used in epidemiological and ecological research. She then discussed the concept of <strong>spatial autocorrelation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This concept helps researchers identify and measure patterns of relationships between regions. It featured an academic collaboration from <strong>Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS)<\/strong>, represented by <strong>Prof. Subchan, M.Sc., Ph.D. and Alvian Hidayatullah<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"767\" src=\"https:\/\/fst.unair.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/1G-1-1024x767.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23401\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fst.unair.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/1G-1-1024x767.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/fst.unair.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/1G-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fst.unair.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/1G-1-768x575.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fst.unair.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/1G-1-1536x1151.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/fst.unair.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/1G-1.jpg 1603w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both speakers attended the workshop in person and presented a topic titled <strong>\u201cTrajectory Optimization: From Continuous Optimal Control to NLP, Dynamic Consistency Estimation, and Adaptive Mesh Refinement.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prof. Subchan opened the session by explaining the challenges of solving <strong>Continuous Optimal Control Problems (OCP)<\/strong> numerically.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These problems require specialized approaches because <strong>Nonlinear Programming (NLP)<\/strong> processes finite-dimensional vectors. In contrast, continuous optimal control problems involve continuous functions.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prof. Subchan then guided participants through the mathematical transformation process using discretization. This process transforms a continuous problem into a <strong>Finite Nonlinear Programming (Finite NLP)<\/strong> problem that can be solved numerically.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The presentation went beyond theoretical concepts. It also demonstrated various applications of <strong>trajectory optimization<\/strong> in strategic sectors.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Examples included <strong>aerospace trajectory design<\/strong>, robotic motion planning, and energy storage management.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, trajectory optimization can support epidemic control and the optimization of global economic dynamics. These examples demonstrate the broad applications of optimization methods in dynamic modeling.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The final session concluded with the presentation of an appreciation certificate to Prof. Subchan. Participants actively engaged with the speakers to discuss opportunities for research integration.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The discussion provided new perspectives on the relationship between <strong>data-driven epidemiological modeling, spatial statistics, and trajectory optimization<\/strong>. These three approaches can complement one another in developing a more comprehensive dynamic modeling framework.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through the <strong>ICOMCOS 2026 Workshop<\/strong>, FST UNAIR further strengthened its international research collaboration network.
