Surabaya – The Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), Universitas Airlangga, continues to strengthen its position on the international stage. This commitment was reaffirmed through a strategic discussion with Prof. Tetsuya Shimamura from Saitama University, Japan, held at the FST UNAIR Meeting Room on Tuesday (January 6, 2026).

The meeting was not merely a ceremonial visit, but served as a strategic bridge for academic communities to expand their reach into global research collaboration. One of the key topics discussed was the initiation of joint publications, enabling collaborative scientific writing between the two institutions. This research partnership is expected to enhance the quality of international publications while fostering a stronger exchange of knowledge between Universitas Airlangga and Saitama University
Positive news was also shared for prospective doctoral students. Prof. Tetsuya Shimamura presented opportunities to pursue doctoral (PhD) studies at Saitama University through the MEXT Scholarship scheme. Notably, up to eight candidates per year may be accepted to conduct research under his supervision in Japan

Representing the faculty leadership, Prof. Dr. Suryani Dyah Astuti, M.Si, Vice Dean II of FST UNAIR, warmly welcomed the initiative. The session was also attended by Dr. Barry Nuqoba from the FST Cooperation Unit, Anjar Triwibowo, Ph.D., Head of the Master’s Program in Biology, as well as faculty members from various study programs, including Biomedical Engineering and Information Systems.
Through this strategic collaboration, FST Universitas Airlangga aims to cultivate future researchers who excel not only at the national level but also possess strong competitiveness in the global academic arena. With expanded access to collaborative research and doctoral scholarships in Japan, the partnership between Universitas Airlangga and Saitama University is expected to continue growing, fostering an inclusive academic ecosystem and amplifying the societal impact of research outcomes.
