FST UNAIR Organizes Joint Seminar for Students from UTM Malaysia

Surabaya, April 30, 2025 – Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) Universitas Airlangga (Unair) held a Joint Seminar that brought together inbound students from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) with students from several partner universities in Indonesia. This activity is part of an international academic mobility program that aims to broaden horizons and strengthen cross-country scientific networks, especially in the fields of computational chemistry and theoretical chemistry.

A total of 25 final year students from the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, UTM attended this seminar as part of the Special Topics in Chemistry course. The course is designed to deepen students’ mastery of molecular simulation software, chemical energy calculations, and molecular structure modeling based on quantum theory approaches.

In the seminar, all UTM students presented the results of their Final Semester Project (PSM) in front of the assessment panel and seminar participants from various institutions. The event was also attended by Febdian Rusydi, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D. (Universitas Airlangga), Dr. Vera Khoirunnisa (Institut Teknologi Sumatera), and Dr. Lusia (Universitas Jenderal Soedirman), as well as Dr. Fazira Ilyana Abdul Razak and Dr. Suhaila Sapari (Universiti Teknologi Malaysia).

In addition to student presentation sessions, the seminar also featured keynote speakers who were lecturers and researchers from partner institutions, including some UTM alumni. Some of the main topics presented included the Development of Chemistry Learning by Prof. Hadi Nur (State University of Malang), Modification of Nano Functional Materials for Solar Cells by Dr. Tahta Amrillah (Airlangga University), Computational Materials Research as an Effort to Optimize Natural Resources by Prof. Wahyu Tri Cahyanto (Jenderal Soedirman University).

Proud achievements were also made by several UTM students who won the Best Presenter Award. This award is given based on an assessment of the quality of material delivery, depth of scientific content, and mastery of the topic presented.

As part of the series of activities, the students also participated in academic visits to FST UNAIR research laboratories, so they gained first-hand experience of modern laboratory facilities and experimental approaches used in cutting-edge chemical research. This visit also opened a dialog space between students and UNAIR researchers in order to explore the potential for research cooperation and academic mobility in the future.

It is hoped that through close collaboration with regional institutions such as Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Institut Teknologi Sumatera (ITERA), Universitas Jenderal Soedirman (UNSOED) and FST Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) can produce a generation of scientists who are not only superior in scientific fields, but also adaptive, collaborative and competitive on a global scale.
