The Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) Project between Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) and The Hague University of Applied Sciences (THUAS), Netherlands, has been implemented by the Bachelor’s Degree Program in Environmental Engineering, Department of Biology, Faculty of Science and Technology, UNAIR. This activity was conducted online via Zoom and Microsoft Teams from October 14, 2024, to November 19, 2024. The COIL Project focuses on the theme “Explore Applicable Solutions for Waste Management Systems in Specific Areas in Indonesia and The Netherlands.”

In this project, students from the Environmental Engineering program at UNAIR used RW 3 Jambangan Surabaya as a study area to survey the level of community participation in household solid waste management. The activity involved 15 students from the Environmental Engineering Program, FST UNAIR, and 8 students from THUAS, Netherlands. The supervising lecturers for this project were Dr. Maikel Maloncy and Dr. Cindy Mielatz from THUAS, Netherlands, and Dr. Rizkiy Amaliyah Barakwan and Dr. Nurina Fitriani from Universitas Airlangga. Activities and tasks during the COIL Project were carried out individually and in groups. The e-learning platform used for this activity was Padlet, where both lecturers and students uploaded materials and assignments.

A workshop on solid waste management was also held, with speakers from the Zero Waste Community NGO in Surabaya and CSR representatives from PT Coca-Cola Company. The workshop discussed how waste management is being implemented by environmental care communities and industries.
The goal of this activity was to provide additional knowledge regarding community, community, and industrial participation in household solid waste management, as well as to offer international opportunities, experience, and networking to students of the Bachelor’s Degree Program in Environmental Engineering, FST-UNAIR.
