Strengthening Collaboration Between FST UNAIR and Temasek Polytechnic, Singapore: Exploring Innovation in Science, Education, and Sustainability

Temasek Polytechnic Singapore conducted a study visit on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), Universitas Airlangga. The event, held in the Faculty’s Meeting Room, began at 09:00 WIB and was opened with a welcome address from the Vice Dean for Research and Cooperation, Prof. Dr. Fatmawati, M.Si. In her speech, Prof. Fatmawati welcomed the Temasek Polytechnic delegation and hoped that the experience gained would be a valuable asset to enrich the science and technology insights in Singapore. After the welcoming address, the session continued with a video presentation of each institution, showcasing the vision, mission, and areas of excellence at Universitas Airlangga’s Faculty of Science and Technology and Temasek Polytechnic. Students from both institutions were also given the opportunity to present information about their history, culture, and social life.

As a central part of the visit, a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) was held with five main topics: education, community service, climate change, artificial intelligence, and responsible consumption. In this FGD, students from both institutions exchanged ideas on these issues. The discussion, attended by FST UNAIR Ambassadors and the Temasek Polytechnic delegation, generated innovative ideas that are expected to be applied in joint projects or within their respective countries. The diverse backgrounds and national contexts presented various perspectives that enriched the results of the discussion, covering ideas for change and ways to achieve sustainability goals.

Following the FGD, the activities continued with a campus tour starting with the Wastewater Treatment Installation (IPAL) at FST Universitas Airlangga. Environmental Engineering student, Kak Amanda, led the tour and explained how the installation works, including how the hot Surabaya weather influences the production and efficiency of the installation. Additionally, the Temasek Polytechnic delegation also visited the Compost House at Universitas Airlangga. There, Environmental Engineering students, Kak Aito and Kak Pradayan, gave a detailed explanation of the composting process using organic materials and innovative initiatives in converting plastic waste into raw materials for 3D printing. This tour provided first-hand insight into the environmental efforts currently undertaken by Universitas Airlangga in promoting sustainability and effective waste management.

The visit concluded with a feedback session and a group photo between students and the Temasek Polytechnic delegation. This event is expected to strengthen the relationship between Universitas Airlangga and Temasek Polytechnic and open up opportunities for collaboration in research, community service, and scientific innovation that will benefit both institutions.
