Visit to Rural Areas: Introducing the Application of Green Industry in Indonesia to International Students on a Small Scale

Batu, August 10, 2024 – As part of the AEGIS 2024 series, the Ambassadors of FST UNAIR collaborated with the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science and Technology, Airlangga University, to introduce a small-scale application of the Green Industry, specifically a local livestock farm at Erwe Farm, Batu. This event was not only attended by 12 international students but also by twenty local residents from Junrejo Village, who participated in gaining practical knowledge from Biology lecturers.

The event began with an introduction to the Department of Biology at UNAIR, a presentation of the international students, and a welcome to the local residents who joined the activity. The first session was a lecture on reproductive health in livestock, delivered by Prof. Dr. Alfiah Hayati, M.Kes., aimed at educating the villagers on optimal reproduction and the reproductive health of their livestock. The second session continued with a workshop on the use of probiotics in livestock feed, presented by Drs. Agus Supriyanto, M.Kes., to highlight the importance of probiotics in cattle feed to optimize milk production.

Additionally, the international students were taken on a tour of the dairy farm at Erwe Farm, where they learned about various aspects of cattle farming, including the types of cows bred, the kinds of feed used, and the proper management of cow manure to reduce carbon emissions. Beyond just listening to explanations, the international students also had the opportunity to practice milking dairy cows firsthand.

After completing their learning session at the dairy farm, the event continued with a visit to one of the most popular tourism villages in recent times, Pujon Tourism Village. Here, the international students enjoyed the fresh air from the vegetable gardens and flower fields that Pujon Village has to offer.

Beyond relaxation, the students also learned about the management of Pujon Tourism Village, which prioritizes community empowerment and environmental sustainability. The village’s agricultural produce is processed by local residents into ready-to-eat meals sold in local restaurants or sold as fresh produce, such as vegetables, strawberries, and more. In addition to providing clean air, Pujon Tourism Village also helps boost the local economy.

During their visit, the international students truly enjoyed the beauty and freshness of nature. “I love the atmosphere here and am amazed by the management of this tourism village. Great idea,” said Sara Ali, an international student from Yemen.
