AEGIS 2024 Closing Ceremony: Celebrating Green Leaders for a Brighter Future

Surabaya, August 13, 2024 – The AEGIS (Airlangga’s Extraordinary Green Industry International Summer Summit) 2024 officially concluded on Tuesday, August 13, 2024. Over five enriching days, 12 international students participated in a series of activities supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and Goal 15 (Life on Land Conservation). The participants engaged in various activities, including visits to environmental communities, small and medium-sized enterprises in livestock and handicraft industries in Batu City, as well as industrial visits and conferences. They also contributed by donating plastic waste to the Surabaya Waste Bank. To mark the symbolic closing, AEGIS hosted a dinner and awards night to honor the contributions and participation of all attendees.

The closing ceremony was held at Hotel Narita, Jatayu Restaurant, Surabaya. In a lively atmosphere, the 12 participants proudly wore traditional attire from their respective countries and presented various artistic performances they had prepared in groups. The event was attended by Vice Dean III for Cooperation & Research, Prof. Dr. Fatmawati, M.Si., along with faculty ambassadors and university representatives. Additionally, delegates from Universitas Airlangga and faculty ambassadors who collaborated with AEGIS also joined the celebration. The ceremony began with a welcoming speech by the AEGIS 2024 Chairman, Christopher Theodore, followed by an official speech from Prof. Dr. Fatmawati, M.Si., marking the official commencement of the closing night.

The participants showcased a diverse range of cultural performances. The Yemeni group performed a theatrical piece depicting the beauty of Yemen’s cities and its rich cultural heritage. The African group captivated the audience with an energetic rap and traditional dance performance. The Pakistani group presented a traditional dance from their homeland, while the Japanese group demonstrated the art of origami while sharing its historical significance in Japanese culture. The evening was a remarkable cultural exchange, with enthusiastic audiences watching, learning, and admiring the performances.

After the performances, the event continued with a grand dinner, followed by an awards session to recognize the participants’ efforts and creativity. The Best Costume Award was given to Haruhisa Okada & Shinji Kuramoto from Japan, while the Best Cultural Performance award was presented to the African contingent, represented by Bagayoko Oumar from Mali and Malony Zorodzai Marekwa from Zimbabwe. Meanwhile, the Best Speaker Award for the conference was awarded to the Yemeni group, consisting of Salsabel Abdo Saleh Alsulaimani, Bian Abdulraheem Motea Alaqab, and Malak Abdulnasser Abduljabbar Alrugimi.

AEGIS 2024 successfully created a significant momentum in inspiring and empowering Green Leaders from various countries to contribute to a brighter and more sustainable future. The cultural and knowledge exchange throughout the event highlighted the importance of global collaboration in achieving sustainability goals. With the theme “Green Leaders, Brighter Future,” AEGIS concluded with success, inspiration, and hope for a greener tomorrow.
