Surabaya, June 18, 2024 – Ambassadors of the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) at Airlangga University (UNAIR) Surabaya welcomed students from Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), United Kingdom, as part of an international university collaboration program aimed at sending students to learn and apply sustainability concepts.
During their stay in Surabaya, LJMU students visited the November 10 Museum, which is dedicated to commemorating the struggle of the people of Surabaya in the Battle of November 10, 1945. At the museum, the students learned about history and cultural heritage preservation as part of sustainability efforts.

The museum visit was guided by a tour guide who provided in-depth explanations about each artifact, including weapons used in the November 10, 1945 battle, and the stories behind them. This guidance helped LJMU students understand the historical context and the importance of cultural preservation within the framework of sustainability, making the visit more educational and meaningful.
The November 10 Museum also offered insights into the importance of peace and justice, aligning with SDG 16, which focuses on promoting peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development. Learning about the struggle of the people of Surabaya encouraged LJMU students to appreciate the significance of social justice and the contribution of strong institutions to peace and stability.
In addition to the November 10 Museum, the students also planned to visit other tourist sites such as the Indonesian Navy Museum. However, the museum was unfortunately closed for the holiday. Instead, the LJMU students were taken on a tour around Surabaya, using a HiAce vehicle, with a stop at Tunjungan Plaza (TP) to understand how Surabaya integrates sustainability aspects into urban management, transportation, and cultural preservation.
This program is relevant to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11, which aims to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. Through visits to various locations, LJMU students were able to observe Surabaya’s efforts to improve urban environmental quality and provide public spaces.
The presence of Liverpool John Moores University students at FST UNAIR is expected to strengthen international academic relations and facilitate knowledge-sharing on sustainability. This hands-on experience is hoped to be applied in their home country, contributing to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals globally.
