The Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) was initiated with the development of Basic Natural Science Institute in the Faculty of Medicine. This institute was developed according to the master plan to develop Universitas Airlangga in 1970-1979. The development of this institute was supported with the adequate provision of human resource and equipment, which then generated the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science (FMIPA). FMIPA was officially legitimized by the Decree of Rector of Universitas Airlangga Number 6400/PT.03.9/T/1982 on 1 July 1982, which was then stipulated with the Decree of the President of the Republic of Indonesiia Number 56/1982 on 7 September 1982 on the Organizational Structure of Universitas Airlangga. The founding of study programs in FMIPA was inaugurated with the Ministerial Decree of the Ministry of Education and Culture Number 0556/D/1982. The study programs were Bachelor’s programs of Biology, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.
In the academic years of 1985/1986-1990/1991, FMIPA UNAIR and 8 FMIPAs of other State Higher Education Institutions were assigned to hold an education for Associate degree based on the decision letter of the Directorate General of Higher Education of Department of Education and Culture Number 68/DIKTI/Kep/1987. In the academic year of 1999/2000, Associate degree program (D-1 and D-3) of Information System was opened under the Department of Mathematics. In the academic year of 2002/2003, Associate degree program of Automation Instrumentation System was opened under the Department of Physics. The three vocational programs were legalized with the letter of the Director General of Higher Education Number 1325/D/T/2002 on 5 July 2002.
Based on the Decree of Rector of Universitas Airlangga Number 3294/J03/OT/2008 on 10 April 2009, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science had its name changed into Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) along with the founding of new study programs, namely Bachelor’s degree programs of Information System, Biomedical Engineering, and Environmental Science and Engineering.
