Lately, there are many cosmetic products in the market that contain dangerous chemicals, especially hydroquinone. Thus, vigilance is needed to choose cosmetics. To overcome it, a new innovation was made by the students of Universitas Airlangga to detect hydroquinone in the content of cosmetics, especially whitening cream, named NONI-KIT. It was created by a team of Student Creativity Program Universitas Airlangga that consists of Nilam Andriyani (FST), Miftakhul Jannatin (FST), Hestin Dwi Anjarwati (FV), and Hartono (FKP).
Hydroquinone is an active substance in cosmetics, especially whitening cream, that has the potential to inhibit melanin formation on the skin’s surface so that the skin becomes white and smooth in a relatively short time. With an instant process and without the supervision of a doctor, hydroquinone has several side effects, namely reddish face, burning sensation, and irritation. In a long term, hydroquinone can potentially cause skin cancer and kidney defect. According to the Ministerial Regulation of the Minister of Health number 445/MenKes/Per/V/1998, only 2% of hydroquinone content is allowed.
NONI-KIT is available in liquid form. It is very easy to use NONI-KIT. Drop 2-3 drops of NONI-KIT to a sample of cosmetic cream, then mix it. The change of cream color is to be matched with the color indicator that is included in NONI-KIT package. If the cosmetic is free of hydroquinone, the color does not change (still yellow/orange). The more the hydroquinone content, the color changes into green, then blue, and if it contains even more hydroquinone, the color gets darker that it eventually changes into black.
The idea and implementation of that liquid was realized in a relatively short time. In fact, it has already acquired a Trading Business License (SIUP) from the Office of Industry and Trade (DISPERINDAG) of Surabaya with SIUP number 503/3494.A/436.6.11/2015.The idea to create this product came from the cosmetic products that are on the rise in the Indonesian market. That idea is also a mission to realize Healthy Indonesia 2025 so that the community is expected to be more selective and smart in choosing cosmetics.
